The Nice Rice Foundation (the "Foundation") was established in 2024 to help more rice farming communities adopt farming methods that benefit the environment and improve farmers' livelihoods.

The foundation is funded by 2% of the net revenues from NICE RICE, a UK rice brand.

NICE RICE sources 100% of its rice from farmers that are using these new methods already. Having seen the positive impact on the environment and farmers first hand, NICE RICE established the Foundation to scale this impact beyond its own supply chain.

Having formed The Foundation, NICE RICE appointed Preena Patel and Malavika Gopinath to join Fergus O'Sullivan (NICE RICE founder) as Trustees.

In 2024 the foundation made its first grant to provide training to more than 300 farmers across two farming villages in Punjab, India. The training is being carried out by Indian NGO Manav Vikas Sansthan.

MVS began the training programme in November 2024 during harvest of the Kharif rice crop.

Through hands on Farmer Field Schools, farmers are learning practical skills in crop residue management (CRM), pest control, soil health, water conservation, and climate resilient farming. They've also been introduced to innovative farming techniques like smart seeding, which reduces soil disturbance and preserves nutrients.

The training has reached 310 farming householders across the villages of Bir Bansian and Jandiala, covering 4,000 acres.

We hope to support partners like MVS over the long-term, deepening the impact of the work started in Punjab and expanding to other areas in Northern India.
